Officials with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority continue to gauge the impact on last November’s opening of Metro’s Silver Line on parking at Washington Dulles International Airport.

“It’s too early to say,” said Chryssa Westerlund, the authority’s executive vice president and chief revenue officer, at the board’s Feb. 15 meeting.

Authority leaders are optimistic that the opening of direct Metro service to the airport will make Dulles competitive for travelers along Metro lines living and working across the Washington region. But at the same time, improved access to transit may impact parking revenue at the airport, if fewer travelers choose to drive and park.

Last year, there were about 1.7 million parking-lot transaction (of any duration) at Washington Dulles, compared to about 800,000 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, where travelers are historically more likely to use ride-share, taxi or transit options.
