Yorktown High School wrestlers Charlotte Bowman, left, and Makayla Grigsby competed in this season's girls state wrestling tournament.

From Yorktown High School, Charlotte Bowman finished fourth at 152 pounds with four pins at the Virginia High School League’s Girls State Open tournament. She was the highest finisher from an Arlington school.

Bowman lost 2-1 in the consolation match for third place. Bowman also placed in last season’s initial state tournament, sixth in her weight class.

“Charlotte Bowman wrestled a great tournament following up on her previous success,” Yorktown coach Andrew Adams said.

Also from Yorktown, Makayla Grigsby finished with a 1-2 record at 114 pounds in her first state tournament.

The girls state tournament was just the second, as girls wrestling was officially sanctioned by the VHSL only last year. There were 408 girls who participated in this year’s event.

Wakefield’s first-year wrestler Cameron Millsaps was sixth with two pins at 152. She finished the season with a 22-4 record and 21 pins. Millsaps did not face Bowman in the state tourney, despite both wrestling at the same weight.

“She’s a first-year wrestler, so the sky is the limit,” Wakefield coach John Leinberger said about Millsaps.

Washington-Liberty’s Skyla Rene wrestled at 132 pounds and won a match in the state tourney.
