The annual season-ending Arlington Cup ice hockey clash between the Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots high-school club teams is scheduled for Friday night, March 8 at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Faceoff is around 7:45 to 8 p.m.

The county-bragging-rights showdown occurs each winter following the regular season and playoffs for each team, which compete in different leagues.

Washington-Liberty won last year’s contest, 3-1. Yorktown won the two prior meetings.

The Generals take a 9-3-1 record into the match while Yorktown is 7-4.

Washington-Liberty recently finished 2-1 in the Capital Scholastic Hockey League playoffs, losing in the championship match to Alexandria City, 4-3. Oliver Black, Sam Lukas and Lucas Everett scored W-L’s goals at the Prince William County Arena. The loss ended the Generals’ nine-match winning steak, after an 0-2-1 start.

Washington-Liberty defeated Forest Park, 5-2, in the semifinals and West Springfield, 4-1, in the first round.

Black scored twice against Forest Park, with William Clarke, Brian Murphy and Paul Burmeister netting the others. Everett scored two against West Springfield with Lukas and Alexander Vanhaaren having the others.

Black was second-team all-league selection for his play this winter. He is the team’s  leading scorer with 16 goals and seven assists. Everett, Burmeister, Simon Jackson, Kai Behrens and Will Jamieson made honorable mention.

Yorktown was 0-1 in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League playoffs, losing to Oakton, 5-2, after a first-round bye. The match was tied at 2, then Oakton scored the final three goals.

Roger Allenbaugh and Henry Dwyer scored Yorktown’s goals. Peyton Tien and Logan McGraw had assists. Allenbaugh is Yorktown’s leading scorer with 11 goals and seven assists.

The loss ended Yorktown’s two-match winning streak, defeating Broad Run, 4-3, and John Champe/Lightridge, 8-3, in those outings.

Yorktown entered the playoffs after finishing first in the Patrick Division standings.
