There wasn’t a lot of hitting in one game but plenty in another by the winning Yorktown Patriots teams in neighborhood baseball and softball high-school rivalry games the night of April 19 against the host Washington-Liberty Generals.

In baseball, Yorktown won 1-0, and in softball, the Patriots were victorious in a 25-3 blowout.

For the Yorktown baseball team, the victory was its 14th in a row against W-L, dating back to the 2017 season. Three of the last five games, including two this spring, were decided by one run. The Generals have scored three or fewer runs in 13 of those games, and have been shut out four times.

In the latest contest, Yorktown scored the only run in the second inning. Thomas Koomey singled, advanced on an error, and later scored on Jack Rubin's RBI fielder’s choice.

Then, Patriots' starting pitcher Jack Rucker continued to do the rest. He threw a complete game, allowing just three hits, walking one, had one balk and one walk and struck out 16. Rucker fanned nine in a row at one point.

Washington-Liberty's three hits in the pitchers' duel were a triple by Sean Guffey, a double by Sam Jackman and Alex Frymoyer singled. Alex Devens started and pitched a strong four innings for the Generals with Jack Keane working the final three frames.

Washington-Liberty has lost seven of its 11 games by one run this season.

In softball, Yorktown’s Margaret Flannery-Goodman led the offense with four hits, including two triples and she had four RBI. Melena Cardinale had three hits, a sacrifice fly and three RBI; Kaiya Ovando doubled and had two RBI; Kelly Chmiel tripled and walked twice; Sophia Giambalvo had two hits and three RBI; Kassen Foreman had two hits and two RBI; Milena West added two hits and an RBI; Bethany Panza had a three-run double; Sejal Lee singled; Audrey Pocrass singled; and McKenna Gurgo had two RBI.

Samantha Parker was the starting and winning pitcher.
