Wakefield High School will host the first Warrior Classic freestyle wrestling tournament in an all-day event Saturday, April 13, with more than 100 boys and girls in grades 8 through 12 expected to participate in 14 different weight classes.

Doors open at 8 a.m., with matches beginning at 10 a.m. The classic is expected to end around 4 p.m.

The competition will be a round-robin format in each weight bracket. All wrestlers should receive a minimum of five matches.

The classic is sanctioned by USA Wrestling and is separate from high-school competition, which is held during the winter and is not a freestyle format.

There will be local high-school wrestlers participating from many different schools, including Wakefield.

Wakefield head wrestling coach John Leinberger is in charge of the event, which has been in the planning stages for months.
