O'Connell softball team finishes regular season undefeated

Knights will be top seed in upcoming conference tournament

The Bishop O’Connell Knights (17-0) finished their regular season with a 17-0 overall record and a 12-0 mark in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference.

The girls high-school softball team defeated Bishop Ireton, 11-0, and 10-0, in its final two games.

The Knights are the top seed in the upcoming WCAC tournament, where the team is the two-time defending champion and has won the competition 25 times in program history. O’Connell also is ranked No. 1 in the Division I private-school state poll.

O’Connell enters post-season play with a 48-game winning streak that spans three seasons.

In the 11-0 win over Ireton, O’Connell had 14 hits, Ireton none. The Knights took control by scoring seven first-inning runs.

Abby Bond homered, Bri Lencz had three hits and two RBI, Emma Prykanowski tripled and had two hits, Callie Lissenden doubled and had two RBI and Sofia Anderson had two hits and two RBI.

Lencz and Ella Fletcher combined for the five-inning no-hitter.

In the 10-0 win, Bond hit a grand slam and drove in five runs. Prykanowski (two RBI), Lissenden and Sophia Taliaferro had two hits each and Lencz threw a two-hitter and struck out nine.

O’Connell had 11 hits. Lencz and M.J. Melvin each doubled.
