Yorktown HIgh School's Eleanor Mahshie was a second-team all region selections for her play this season.

Highlighted by first-team selections Carlton Young of the Wakefield Warriors and Andrew Maria of the Yorktown Patriots, six players from varsity basketball squads in Arlington were chosen all-region for their performances during the 2023-24 high-school season.

Forwards Young and Maria were 6D North Region first-team boys choices. Making second-team boys all-region was Wakefield senior forward Miles Hancock.

No girls from Arlington schools were selected first-team all-region, but three made second team. They were Washington-Liberty junior guard Francis Shapiro and her sophomore center teammate Eve Jungman and Yorktown sophomore guard Eleanor Mahshie.

Young and Hancock, seniors, helped the Wakefield boys (21-5) earn the top seed in the Liberty District tournament, win that competition this season, then reach the semifinals of the region tourney. Young was chosen as the district's Player of the Year.

Maria, a junior, helped the Yorktown boys finish 14-11 and earn a region-tournament berth, losing to champion South Lakes in the first round.

With Jungman and Shapiro among the team's top scorers, the Washington-Liberty girls (11-10) were the No. 2 seed in the Liberty District tournament and earned a region berth, where they lost to champion Centreville in the first round.

Mahshie helped the Yorktown girls bounce back with eight victories this season after a one-win campaign last winter.

Wakefield head coach Tony Bentley was chosen as the co-region Coach of the Year along with Mike Desmond of the South Lakes Seahawks. Bentley has 383 career wins.
