In high school at Washington-Liberty, Ian Naff became a standout track and field athlete. Now in college at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, it hasn’t taken the freshman long to make his mark on that level of competition.

At a meet at Boston University, Naff ran his way into the history books after setting the indoor school record in the 400 meters. Naff crossed the finish line with a time of 48.35, bettering the long-standing previous record of 48.72, set in 1981 by Kurt Collela.

At the same meet, the marine-environmental-science major ran the 200 meters in his season-best time of 22.17.

At a different meet, Naff placed second in the 55 meters in 6.71.

At Washington-Liberty, Naff was a versatile athlete. He was a member of tennis, football, cross country and track and field squads. He was the team’s indoor track and field Most Valuable Player as a senior.

In his senior season, Naff finished second in the 500 meters at the indoor state meet, and won that event at district and region competitions. At an Adidas indoor national meet, Naff won the 400 and was fourth in the 200.
