Mini-cyle races are expected to be part of Arlington Little League's opening-day ceremonies again this year.

The annual Arlington Little League opening-day ceremony will include many of the traditional features and activities during this year’s Sunday, April 7 event at Barcroft Park.

The parade of some 1,000 players and 100 teams begins at 1:30 p.m. as they march from one field onto the outfield of the park’s main diamond, followed by the ceremonies at 2 p.m., held on that same field.

First pitches will be thrown during ceremony, past accomplishments by Little Leaguers will be recognized, and there will be the usual games and contests like Hula Hoop and mini-cycle competitions.

Members of Arlington’s three varsity public high-school baseball teams – Wakefield, Washington-Liberty and Yorktown – will be on hand to welcome the Little Leaguers. First-year Wakefield head coach Adam Balutis continues as Arlington Little League’s president, and will lead the ceremonies.

Various Arlington politicians usually make an appearance.

There will be face-painting tables, sponsor tables and food trucks on hand.

Longtime league official Shirley Brothwell said the league is working on confirming a guest speaker for the event, and are trying to have the Baltimore Orioles mascot appear.

Following the ceremony, Little League games of different age levels are expected to be played that day at the park.
