Arlington baseball teams have mixed spring-break results

Alex Devens, batting, and the Washington-Liberty Generals baseball team lost some close games at a spring-break tournament in Florida.

The Washington-Liberty Generals lost some close games and had some strong pitching performances on a spring-break trip to Orlando.

The high-school baseball team (4-6 overall) went 0-5 in the competition, losing three one-run games and another by three runs.

Washington-Liberty’s Jack Couture made the all-tournament team as a result of a strong pitching performance in a 3-2 loss to Parrish Community. He didn’t allow an earned run and struck out five in 52/3 innings of work, with his fastball clocked at 93 mph.

Alex Devens also had a strong pitching effort for the Generals. He fanned 10 in six innings in a 3-2 loss to IMG Academy Blue.

Sean Guffey and Alex Frymoyer had strong showings on the mound. In three innings of relief, Frymoyer struck out five and gave up one hit.

Top hitters in the five games were Frymoyer and Mischa Varley, each with two in a contest.

Washington-Liberty is back in action this week with three games scheduled, weather permitting.

• In other spring-break tournament baseball action, the Yorktown Patriots (7-2) won their final three games to finish 3-2 in an event in Northern Virginia.

Those victories were over Battlefield, 10-6, Centreville, 2-1, and Edison, 11-1.

John Rizzo and Max Troiano combined for the win against Centreville. Rizzo started and worked four innings and Troiano threw the last three.

Against Edison in a shortened contest, Cameron Gonzalez and Owen Woodward combined for the victory.

Jack Rucker started and pitched five innings against Battlefield. Dereje Reichert worked the final two innings in relief to get the win.

With the game tied at 6, Yorktown scored four runs in the top of the seventh to win.

Thomas Koomey doubled in the game and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jack Rubin, who also had a single. Koomey also had an RBI single.

Woodward had a two-run triple, Rizzo and Isaac Hobbs had RBI singles, and Hobbs and Bryan Slattery walked with the bases loaded.

• The Wakefield Warriors (1-6) finished 1-3 on a spring-break trip in Florida, defeating Old Bridge, 11-6, in its first game.

In that win, Ben Crowe and Joseph Todd had RBI doubles; Lucas Mejia had a two-run single and an RBI groundout; Cort Bringham, Kendrick Tribe and Malachy Meryweather had singles; Beau Branch had two RBI when getting hit by pitches; Adam Barrington doubled; and Peter Boerstling was on base four times and had an RBI groundout. 

• The Bishop O’Connell Knights (5-2) take a five-game winning streak into their spring-break tournament in Myrtle Beach this week, with five contests scheduled.

O’Connell blanked John Paul the Great, 1-0, in its final game before spring break.

Noah Haught pitched the final four innings of relief to get the win. Peyton Kijek started and worked three frames.

O’Connell’s run came in the bottom of the sixth when Truman Leckey doubled and eventually scored on a groundout.

In their previous game, the Knights topped DeMatha, 7-3, with Leckey (triple), Kamari Chisolm, Jack Woda and Mark Sirianni (two doubles) all having two hits. Leckey and Sirianni each had two RBI.

Drew Markey was the winning pitcher in relief.
