Field to Table, which operates a number of farmers’ markets in Arlington, on Sept. 16 presented its annual gift of $10,000 to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC).

“The heart of Field to Table’s mission is rooted in our dedication to fostering healthy eating in Arlington,” said the organization’s executive director, Rob Swennes.

Founded in 2012, Field to Table currently operates the farmers’ markets in Westover, Lubber Run, Fairlington and Cherrydale. Since its inception, AFAC has sent volunteers for weekly pick-ups of donated produce from farm vendors and nonperishable foods donated by market customers. In 2022, Field to Table markets donated more than 19,000 pounds of freshly harvested fruits and vegetables.

This year, Field to Table has offered grants to other community groups through a program that so far has distributed $25,000 to local organizations that work with families, students and seniors.

“We believe that by bringing farmers markets into communities around the shared goal of access to healthy food for all of our neighbors, we can create lasting positive impacts that extend far beyond what happens on Saturdays and Sundays at our markets,” Swennes said.
