SERIOUS CRIME UP IN 2023 ACROSS COUNTY:

• The overall significant-crime rate in Arlington County was up 6 percent from 2022 to 2023, according to new data included in the Arlington County Police Department’s annual report.

Reported crimes against persons were up 8.3 percent, crimes against property were up 4.8 percent and crimes against society were up 14.5 percent from a year report.

Increases in robbery, burglary, simple assault, intimidation and drug/narcotics offenses helped to fuel the increase, police said. The figures come from data submitted in March to the Virginia State Police, using  the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) format.

Despite the year-over-year increase, Arlington’s number of offenses per 100,000 individuals remains below the state average, police said.

“I remain incredibly proud of the work performed by the sworn and professional staff of the Arlington County Police Department to prevent and solve crime, maintain transportation safety and build lasting relationships within the Arlington community,” Police Chief Andy Penn said in providing the information.

In the annual report, Arlington police also noted ongoing challenges in recruiting and retention.
