How much focus should Arlington Public Schools put into self-identified LGBTQ members of its student body?

That is another area that will be hashed out by June 20, when School Board members are slated to adopt a 2024-30 strategic plan that will guide policymaking efforts.

The issue of LGBTQ students drew differing views during public feedback and discussion among a steering committee set up as part of the strategic-plan effort.

Some argued that the group requires more protections and services, while others contend that the school system’s focus should be the well-being of all students. There also were concerns raised that the school system’s focus on emotional health could be to the detriment of overall academic rigor.

Concerns during the feedback period also were raised about indoctrination of students, school officials acknowledged in materials to be presented to School Board members on May 30.

Superintendent Francisco Durán’s formal recommendation will go to School Board members on June 6, with a final vote slated two weeks later.
