Local region's homes market goes into summertime hibernation

home-sales-1

Woof, woof, woof: Those are the dog days of summer rearing their heads and taking an already slow local real-estate market even slower.

New listings, purchase contracts and showings all were down during the week ending Aug. 20 compared to the same period a year ago, according to figures reported Aug. 21 by Bright MLS, the local multiple-listing service.

The specifics:

• New listings during the week stood at 1,130, down 1.4 percent from a week before and down 6.1 percent from a year ago.

• New purchase contracts for the week totaled 1,172, down 4.4 percent and 27.7 percent, respectively.

• Showings for the week stood at 19,493, off 5.3 percent and 21.5 percent.

Figures represent market activities in the District of Columbia; Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church in Virginia; and Montgomery, Prince George’s and Frederick counties in Maryland.

Everything was down except the median list price of $556,485, which was up slightly (1.2%) from a week before and up slightly more substantially (3.2%) from a year ago.

Figures represent most, but not all, homes on the market. All current figures are preliminary and subject to revision.
