Oakton nips Madison for third in Concorde golf, South Lakes Wins

Cougars earn berth to play in region competition

In previous years, the Madison Warhawks and Oakton Cougars often battled for the championship of the Concorde District golf tournament.

This season, the neighborhood high-school rivals instead were in a showdown for the third spot, which brought a region-tourney berth. Oakton finished on top in that clash by one stroke, finishing with a two-day, 36-hole team total of 334-329-663 on the par-72 Lakes Course at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton. Madison shot 337-327–664.

Oakton advances to the 36-hole 6D North Region tourney at Bristow Manor Golf Club.  Madison’s season is over as a team, but two Warhawks’ players – Ryan Moseley and Colin Park – move on individually to the region.

Moseley shot a 75-78–153 to finish fifth in the individual standings and Park 82-79–161.

Leading Oakton was Michael Zhou with an eighth-place 81-75–156 total and Ben Shield shot 78-82–160. Also for Oakton, Oliver Cachon-Molina shot 96-83–179, Ryan Dann 87-93–180, Henry Hung 95-89–184 and Justin Faben 88-101–189.

The South Lakes Seahawks won the team title with a 308-303–611 score and  the Chantilly Chargers second at 310-304–614. The district-tourney title was South Lakes’ first since 2003.

“We’ve been on the doorstep a few times, but this year got it done,” South Lakes coach Kevin Anderson said. “We talk to our players about trying to improve by at least two shots in the next round, and they did that in this tournament.”
