They’re baaaaaaaack.
After two seasons of finishing out of the top three, the Madison Warhawks have returned to the throne as champions of the Concorde District golf tournament.
Madison won the 2024 six-team high-school golf competition with a two-round, 36-hole team score of 317-317–634 at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton. The Oakton Cougars and Chantilly Chargers tied for second with 646 totals.
Madison sophomore Ryan Moseley was the individual champion, shooting 75-75–150, one stroke ahead of runner-up Timothy Yi (76-75–151) of Centreville, with Oakton’s Ben Shield tied for third (77-78–155) with Madison’s Jack Cilman (78-77–155).
The Warhawks have enjoyed a long stretch of perennial success in the Concorde tourney, often winning or finishing second, prior to the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Madison last won in 2021. The Wawhawks were fourth-with a 664 total last season and last at 694 in 2022.
“It was teamwork and determination to comeback and win this season,” Madison coach Mike Serone said. “Last year we finished fourth by one stroke to Oakton, and that was a big disappointment. The kids were dedicated and had the motivation to do better after last year.”
Serone also noted that depth has been a big factor in the Warhawks’ improvement. Of the six Madison players who participated in the district tourney, each counted in the team scoring over the two rounds.
Moseley led the way with his individual victory, with both rounds played on the par-72 lakes course. He made two birdies the first round and three the second, when he also three-putted three times.
“My chipping saved me in the second round,” Moseley said. “I hit zero fairways with my driver, but my irons were good and my chipping got me up and down a lot.”
Mosely’s father, Steve, played for the Madison teams that won district, region and state championships in the early 1990s.
The other four players for Madison in the district tournament were Colin Park shooting 85-83–168, Ethan Wasserman 89-82–171, Liam Walsh 82-90–172 and Carter Cunningham 82-101–183.
Oakton’s Ryan Kim was the first-round leader with a 74, shot 87 the second day for a 161 total. Pierce Strong shot 90-82–172 for Oakton, Matthew Elder 83-91–174, Dylan Reese 94-82–176 and Ryan Yoon 83-94-177.
Oakton and Madison each dropped their team scores significantly from last season. Oakton’s third-place total in 2023 was 663 and Madison’s fourth-place score was 664.
Madison, Oakton and Chantilly all advance to the 6D North Region tourney.
The defending champion South Lakes Seahawks finished sixth this season in the district with a 351-342–693 total.
The team scoring was close after the first round, with Madison and Oakton tied for the lead with 317 totals and Westfield right behind at 319.
