With three touchdown passes from quarterback Cole Samburg, the visiting Langley Saxons held on to defeat the Herndon Hornets, 18-15, Sept. 6 in a Liberty District high-school football game.
Langley begins the season with a 2-0 record for the second straight season. So far the Saxons are the only team in the district with a 1-0 mark. The others have yet to play a league contest, with Herndon 0-1.
Against Herndon, Langley's 18 points came on the three TDs, as the Saxons did not make a conversion.
Samburg threw scoring passes of 68 and nine yards to Robert Roncskevitz and the other to Vincent Shen for 20 yards. Roncskevitz had the two catches for 77 yards, Shen caught five for 66 and Elias Dyrud and Joe Proctor each had two catches. Lee Evans, Cannon Clarke and Mark Muehlheuser had one catch each.
Roncskevitz led Langley with 50 yards rushing. Victor Cho ran for 21 and Jackson Popovich 15.
Samburg was 14 of 22 passing for 203 yards and no interceptions, and he ran for 19 yards.
The Saxons had 315 total yards and no turnovers.
On defense, tackling leaders were Roncskevitz, Hudson Eberline, Ellington Roane and Wyatt Kenney (one sack).
Langley's next game is Friday, Sept.13 at 7 p.m. against the host Edison Eagles (0-1) in Franconia.
