Fairfax County Public Schools will receive an estimated $959.2 million in state education aid for the fiscal year beginning July 1, up from the $947.7 million expected to come into the county’s coffers this fiscal year.

Estimates of state funding were provided to school-system superintendents by the Virginia Department of Education earlier this month, based on actions taken up to that point in the 2023 General Assembly session. Fairfax’s share is part of $9.38 billion in funding from the state government to local school districts, including all the various pots of cash.

State officials said the figures could vary depending on final budget amendments adopted by the General Assembly when it returns to Richmond to complete work.

The figures include extra funding proposed by the General Assembly to account for a previous overstatement of the amounts of basic aid school systems would receive. The Virginia Department of Education was responsible for that error, which led school districts to anticipate more funds than they were scheduled to receive.

Fairfax Superintendent Michelle Reid has proposed a fiscal 2024 budget of $3.5 billion, up $250 million from the current year. Most funding for Fairfax and other school districts in Northern Virginia comes from local sources, augmented by state and federal cash.
