The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is celebrating a number of new international destinations available to travelers from Washington Dulles International Airport.

May 25 marked the beginning of United Airlines' non-stop (seasonal) service from Dulles to Berlin's Brandenburg Airport. Officials from the airline, airports authority and German embassy participated in a ceremony prior to the first flight.

The inaugural flight, a Boeing 767-400ER aircraft, departed Dulles gate D3 around 5:45 p.m. At the gate, the 225 passengers and other guests were treated to themed food and beverages, including German pretzels with mustard, as part of the pre-flight festivities.

“With new service to Berlin, Dulles now has nonstop service to 41 capitals around the world," said Chryssa Westerlund, executive vice president and chief revenue officer for the airports authority. She predicted the first-year economic impact in the local area owing to the service would surpass $22 million.

Flights between Washington and Berlin are slated to operate seasonally through Oct. 27. United Flight 234 will depart Dulles at 5:45 p.m. daily, arriving at the German capital at 8:20 a.m. the next day. The return Flight 235 will depart Berlin at 11:10 a.m., arriving at Dulles at 2:30 p.m. (All times are local at the two cities.)

As the summer travel season kicks off, additional destination launches are coming to Dulles. Nonstop service is slated to begin June 1-2 to Vancouver, London Gatwick, Calgary and Rome.
