Joe Reed, the Yorktown High School head boys basketball coach the past eight seasons, resigned March 22 during a meeting with school administrators.

The coach stepped down because he didn’t believe he was treated fairly by the administration and had differences of opinions with his supervisors, during his tenure

Reed told the Gazette Leader: “The fundamental differences between myself and the administration are too much of a burden on myself and family,” Reed said. “I coached under an unhealthy environment for eight seasons. This was never my intention to leave in this manner. When I was able to coach the way I wanted to coach, we were a championship-caliber team.”

Reed sent his letter of resignation to the Arlington School Board.

One of Reed’s disagreements was different results from player surveys regarding his coaching and likability that were taken by himself and his administrators.

“We thank coach Reed for his commitment and passion over the last eight years, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Yorktown director of student activities Mike Krulfeld said.

Yorktown finished with a 12-11 record this past season, a big improvement over last winter’s 5-16 mark. The 2022-23 campaign included a holiday-tournament championship with a 3-0 record, his second holiday-tourney title during his eight seasons.

Reed’s most successful campaign was in 2019-20, when the Patriots finished 20-6 and won the Liberty District tournament. The following, COVID-shortened season, Yorktown went 10-6 and reached the semifinals of the 6D North Region tournament.

“I am forever grateful for the outpouring of support from the parents and the coaches,” Reed said. “Even in years when we had less talent, Yorktown became a team that you knew was going to compete every night.”

Krulfeld said Yorktown will accept resumes for the head coaching vacancy for a couple of weeks, and hopes to have a new coach in place by late April or early May.
