Yorktown girls cross country team finishes fifth in state

The 6D North Region girls champion Yorktown Patriots cross country team finished fifth at the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state meet Nov. 11 on the 5,000-meter Oatlands Plantation course in Leesburg.

Yorktown finished with 166 points. West Springfield won with 62.

Individually for Yorktown in the state meet, Sofia Sheldon was the the team’s top finisher in 31st in 19:58.

Eleanor Whitehouse was next in 41st (20:13), followed by Ellen Malloy in  48th (20:26), Ella Dunn 53rd (20:37), Ali Mathews 57th (20:47), Sofie Keppler 62nd (21:01) and Hannah Hawkins was 77th (21:27).

Prior to the state meet this fall, Yorktown won the region championship, was second in the Liberty District meet and won the Arlington County competition back in October.

In the boys Class 6 state meet on the same course and day, Yorktown runners Matthew Pedicano was 24th (16:40), Reid Dalley 36th (17:03) and Roman Steis 73rd (17:57).
