Yorktown boys win district-tourney lacrosse title, region final next

Patriots will play for region championship against Madison

Trailing by three goals in the fourth quarter, the host and top-seed Yorktown Patriots (17-1) rallied to win, 15-14, over the McLean Highlanders by netting the final four scores in the championship match of the Liberty District boys lacrosse tournament.

McLean led for the whole way in the second half until Will Hock tied the score at 14 with 4:52 to play. Hudson Greene netted the game-winner with 2:58 left to give Yorktown the 15-14 lead in the high school game.

Greene and Garrett Wing each scored four goals for Yorktown, with Hock having three and an assist to go with four ground balls. Greene added three assists and Wing two.

Also scoring for Yorktown were Jack Martinez, Miles Fang, Gray Macaulay and Dylan Lefton with a goal each. Goalie Hayden Wittington had 10 saves. Lefton gathered eight ground balls, Vinny Spolidoro five and Harry Larbalestier three.

Yorktown was 2-0 in the district tournament, routing Herndon, 18-5, in the semifinals after a first-round bye. Martinez and Wing each scored four goals in that win and Hock, Greene and Nathan Graves scored two each. Greene had five assists and Wing four.

Following the district tournament, Yorktown began play with a 16-7 victory over the Centreville Wildcats is a 6D North Region first-round game, then defeated the Langley Saxons, 13-6, in the semifinals. The victory was the team’s 17th in a row, after a 10-8 opening-season loss to The Heights.

Yorktown and the Madison Warhawks are scheduled to play in the region championship match on Friday, May 26 at Madison.
NOTE: Martinez was chosen as the Liberty District Player of the Year for Yorktown and he also made first-team all-district along with Greene, Hock, Fang and Spolidoro.
