Washington-Liberty gymnast ties for sixth in state all-around

Senior also ties for second on the vault

Washington-Liberty High School gymnasts Alana Johnson finished sixth in the Class 6 state all-around competition.

By tying for second on the vault with a 9.65 score and tying for sixth on the uneven bars at 9.175, Washington-Liberty High School senior Alana Johnson finished  tied for sixth in the girls all-around competition with a 36.775 total score at the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state gymnastics meet.

Johnson also scored a 9.0 on the balance beam and an 8.95 on the floor exercise.

The winning all-around score was 37.5 by Sofia Catlin of Kellam High School.

“Alana did exceptionally well,” Washington-Liberty coach Joe D’Emidio said. “There are some elite gymnasts at the state meet and Alana was right up there with them. She almost won the vault.”

The winning vault score was a 9.675.

Johnson entered the state meet after winning the 6D North Region all-around title a few days earlier.

Also from Washington-Liberty at the state meet, Liberty District all-around champion Noki Din had a 9.3 on the vault and an 8.625 on the bars. Din was the region’s all-around champion in 2023.

Wakefield High’s Maddie Wearing had a 9.25 on the vault and placed fourth on the beam with a 9.425 score.

Yorktown’s Olivia Juergens scored an 8.975 on the floor.

Washington-Liberty did not qualify for the state meet in the team competition, after finishing a close second in the earlier region meet. Only the region team champion advanced to the state, which was the McLean Highlanders. They were third in the team standings at states.

Washington-Liberty also finished second to McLean in the Liberty District meet.
