Four mats in the main gym were used for the second annual Vic Blue wrestling tournament at Wakefield High School.

Wakefield High School had one individual champion and a trio of runners-up at its  own multiple-team second annual Vic Blue Wrestling Tournament  on Dec. 16.

There were 19 teams in the competition, which was for junior varsity and novice wrestlers, and there was a separate girls tournament. Wakefield had nine female wrestlers.

The late Blue was the former head wrestling coach at Wakefield. He started the program and later became principal at the school.

Wakefield’s champion was female wrestler Cameron Millsapps at the 165-pound weight division. She finished 2-0 with two first-period pins. Those results upped Millsapps' overall season record to 11-0 with 11 first-period pins.

Second for Wakefield were female wrestlers Nicole Barahona-Rios at 107, Fatima Granados at 130 and Fabiola Matas at 235.

Also for the Wakefield girls, Vera Fitzke was third at 130 and Ashley Alvarez fourth at 107.

Girls wrestling was officially sanctioned as a varsity sport last year by the Virginia High School League. There will be a second individual girls state tournament this season.

There were around 40 female wrestlers in this year’s Vic Blue tourney.

“We are committed at Wakefield to growing girls wrestling," Leinberger said. “Last season we had one female wrestler on our team. This year we have nine. Cameron is one of them and she has been destroying opponents.”

For the Wakefield boys at the Vic Blue tournament, Omer Polanco was third at 157, Jake Santos (106) and Daniel Smith (126) were fourth and Sulaiman Sarbaz (138) was sixth.

Yorktown had an individual boys champion in Oliver Uz at 175 with a 4-0 record and three pins. Second was Landon Foose at 285.

Third for Yorktown were Saeed Almazrouei (106), Elijah Varona (132), Shuaib Mansory (150) and Gombojav Erdenesambuss (190). Fifth was Nathan Bastuscheck (126).

For the Yorktown girls, Carolina Alleman was third at 235 and Makayla Grigsby fourth at 114.

For the Bishop O’Connell boys, Marco Souaya was sixth at 150.
