The Wakefield Warriors girls softball team finished second in the Liberty District tournament, losing to the top-seeded and host McLean Highlanders, 4-0, in the May 19 championship game.

Wakefield (13-8) was 2-1 in the high-school tournament, routing the Washington-Liberty Generals, 12-1, in the first round, then topping the Langley Saxons, 6-1, in the semifinals.

Next for Wakefield is the eight-team 6D North Region tournament. The Warriors were scheduled to play the Centreville Wildcats in a first-round game earlier this week.

In the district-tournament semifinal win over Langley, Devyn Carlson pitched a complete game to get the win and she had two hits with the bat.

Other top hitters in the win for Wakefield were M.J. Patil with an RBI triple and sacrifice fly, Reece Wilder with two singles,  Kaya DeMarco,  Olivia Henry and Hannah Nilame.

Carlson also was the winning pitcher against Washington-Liberty, and she homered in the victory. Wilder had a three-run single; Elena Rochard had two RBI singles and a walk; Amari Debney had a two-run hit; DeMarco, Wilder and Patil (sacrifice fly) doubled; Nilname had a sacrifice fly; and Zaneta Kocurkova had a single.

Carlson pitched a complete game in the loss to McLean, as the Warriors had few scoring opportunities.
