O'Connell girls, boys basketball teams finish 1-1 in state tourneys

Boys were seeded fifth, girls sixth in playoff field

The Bishop O’Connell High School girls and boys basketball teams each finished with 1-1 records in the Division I private-school state tournaments, ending their seasons.

The fifth-seeded boys (18-14) defeated No. 12 seed St. Christopher’s, 81-67, in Arlington in the first round, then lost on the road to No. 4 seed Blue Ridge, 50-48.

O’Connell led Blue Ridge 48-47 with less than a minute to play, then a three-point play gave Blue Ridge the 50-48 advantage with 24 seconds left. O’Connell missed a trio of shots attempting to tie the game.

The sixth-seeded O’Connell girls (12-16) also won at home in the opening round over No. 11 seed Trinity Episcopal, 65-28, then were eliminated on the road against third-seeded Bishop Ireton, 82-56.

For the O’Connell boys in the win over St. Christopher’s, Shane Lincoln scored 15 points, had five steals, four assists and four rebounds. Quincy Wadley had 14 points and two steals; Jadyn Harris scored 13 points, made three three-pointers and had six assists; Corey Caulker scored 14 with four rebounds and two assists; Patrick O’Brien scored 11 with nine rebounds and two blocks; and Adlan Elamin scored seven.

Against Blue Ridge, Wadley scored 22 points and had eight rebounds; Coulker scored 10; Lincoln had six points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals; and Elamin made two three-pointers and scored six.

For his play throughout the season, Wadley, a freshman guard, was chosen first team all-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference.  Harris made second team and Caulker and Adam Oummidoch were honorable mention selections.

For the O’Connell girls in the win over Trinity Episcopal, Dru Carlton scored 24 points, had five steals and three blocked shots. Daniya Brown scored 10 and had three steals; Kristin Smith and Denver Carlton scored eight each; Jamieson McIntyre scored six, had eight rebounds, five assists and three steals; and Adriana Mayorga scored six with three steals. 

NOTES: Under new head coach Brittany Davis, the O’Connell girls won 12 games this season after winning only three last winter . . . Longtime O’Connell boys head coach  Joe Wootten finished this season with 511 career victories, all at O’Connell.
