Multiple Washington-Liberty grads playing college football

Players saw limited action in their initial seasons of play

Washington-Liberty High School graduate Elijah Hughes played in six games as a freshman linebacker/lineman for the University of Southern California’s football team during the regular season.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Hughes made two solo tackles (one for a loss) and assisted on another tackle in those  outings.

During his senior season for Washington-Liberty, Hughes was the 6D North Region’s Defensive Player of the Year and was a first-team Class 6 all-state selection.

Hughes also was the starting center at W-L for the boys basketball team and threw the shot put and discus during the outdoor track and field season.

Washington-Liberty graduates JoJo Sovula and Kevin Cruz were freshmen players on the roster of the Division III Shenandoah University football team and Herbert Sovula plays for the two-year Louisburg College team in North Carolina.

Cruz is a linebacker who saw action in one game this season. JoJo Sovula is a wide receiver. Herbert Sovula is a fullback for Louisburg.

Sophomore Sam Hughes plays for Division I Virginia Tech as a sophomore linebacker/defensive back.
