The Yorktown Patriots’ foursome of Kelly Brown, Piper Gill, Olivia Stafford and Emme Yoder finished as Virginia High School League Class 6 state champions playing for two sport teams during the 2023-24 school year.

This past fall, they were members of the state-champion girls field hockey squad, then followed as members of this spring’s state-champ girls lacrosse team.

Those units finished with a combined 41-3 record and also each won Liberty District tournament titles. The field hockey team finished second in the 6D North Region tournament during the fall, with the lacrosse group winning the region this spring.

Overall, Stafford, Yoder and Gill have been on three state-championship teams  at Yorktown in both field hockey and lacrosse. The field hockey squad won its first state championship in 2021. Gill and Stafford played on that team.

Since the 2021 fall season, the Yorktown field hockey and lacrosse teams have each won two state crowns, with the field hockey  squad finishing second in 2022.

The versatile Stafford also was a member of Yorktown’s district-tournament championship girls basketball team in the 2021-22 campaign. This season’s lacrosse players Helene Lydon and Victoria Carcillo also were on that basketball team.
