The Yorktown High School baseball team finished 2-2 at a spring-break tournament.

The Wakefield Warriors, Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots combined to win six games during spring-break baseball competition in Myrtle Beach.

Wakefield finished 3-2 to up its overall record to 4-6, Yorktown (6-4) won its final two games to go 2-2 and W-L (2-8) was 1-3, winning its opening high-school contest.

Wakefield’s first game was a 10-0 shutout victory with pitchers Mason Bull and Wade Brigham combining on the mound. The Warriors’ other wins were by 11-8 and 5-3 scores. They lost 11-6 and 5-1.

Keegan Mahoney was the winning pitcher in Wakefield’s final victory.

Wakefield’s top hitters in the five games were Brigham, Bull, Mike Duncan, Evan Leese, David Hilscher, Teddy Angel, Beau Branch, Charlie Grove, Ryan Beck, Riley Sagana, Graham Wiggins and Mike Duncan, who homered in the competition.

Yorktown played poorly, according to head coach John Skaggs, and made multiple errors in losing its first two games by 8-4 and 10-0 scores.

“We weren’t very good at all in those two games, and it was embarrassing. So we had a talk afterward and played much better and like we can after that,” Skaggs said. “We finished 2-2 and did what we needed to in those last two games. Finishing 2-2 after those first two games was a good turnaround.”

Yorktown defeated Aynor of the local area, 11-5, then West Forsythe, N.C., 8-7 in eight innings, in its final game.

Against West Forsythe, Yorktown led 7-3, then the game was tied a 7 and went into extra innings. Trevor McAndrews had the game-winning RBI in the eighth inning. He also was the winning pitcher in one perfect inning of relief. The pitching appearance was his first of the season.

Isaac Hobbs hit a three-run homer in the win and Kyle Langley, Keegan Westoff and Jack Rucker had RBI hits. Ryan Powers had a hit and Owen Woodward tripled.

In the win over Aynor, McAndrews, Hobbs and Bradley Labant homered. Rucker was the winning pitcher in relief.

Washington-Liberty won its first game over North Laurel, 8-4.

Will Thompson started and pitched five innings to get the win. He allowed three hits, two runs, did not walk a batter and struck out three. Luke Schwarz pitched the final two innings of shutout relief with a strikeout and no walks.

With the bat for W-L, Luke Harnishfeger doubled and had two RBI; Jack Butler doubled and had an RBI; and Jake Guffey, Mack Kiatrungrit and Jack Horne had hits. Alex Devens had two RBI.

In other games for the Generals, Sean Guffey had a hit and an RBI; Sam Abramowicz had two hits and an RBI; Alex Frymoyer and Harnishfeger each had a hit and one RBI; and Butler, Horne and Jake Guffey doubled.

All three teams return to action this week with district and non-district games.

Yorktown leads the Liberty District with a 4-0 record. The Patriots play at league rival Herndon on April 15 at noon in their next district game.
