A jumper, a thrower and a sprinter from Arlington schools recorded second-place finishes at the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 indoor state track and field championships in Virginia Beach.

All three were senior boys, and they had the highest finishes of any participant from an Arlington school in the competition.

From Washington-Liberty High School, shot-putter Jonah Friedman had a second-place throw of 56-feet, 51/2 inches and sprinter Ian Naff was second in the 500-meters in 1:05.97. Yorktown High’s Peter Oliveira was second in the high jump at 6-4.

All three of those athletes won those same events in previous region and district championships this season.

Also at the state meet, Naff was 11th in the 300 meters.

In other boys events, Wakefield High’s Bryant Cruz-Lemus was 10th in the high jump and Harrison Greenberg 15th in the 1,600, and Yorktown’s Colin McCormack was 13th in the shot put.

The top girls finisher from an Arlington school was Washington-Liberty’s Alexandra Malone, with a third in the pole vault with a jump of 10-6. She previously won region and district meets.

Washington-Liberty’s 4x200 girls relay placed 15th.

Leading the Wakefield girls at the state meet was senior distance runner Elizabeth Coe. She finished fifth in both the 1,000 (3:01.87) and 1,600 (5:01.26).

Coe set team records in those events throughout the indoor season.

Also for the Wakefield girls at states, Kenedy Shields was 11th in the high jump, Hosanna Connor 14th in the pole vault and the 4x800 relay was fifth. Coe ran on that relay.

For the Yorktown girls, the 4x400 relay had the team’s top finish in 13th.

Some of those top Arlington finishers at the state meet will participate in the upcoming New Balance national indoor high-school championships in Boston in coming days.
