To the editor: The issue of a Gaza ceasefire was raised before the Arlington County Board in both February and April. In April, board chair Libby Garvey acknowledged the matter, indicating that the board was considering it. However, similar discussions in previous years have failed to yield tangible results.

During the County Board’s “Open-Door Monday” event on May 6 with Garvey, I inquired about resolutions regarding ceasefire, Nakba Day and an anti-semitism resolution the Arlington County Board adopted in June 2022, which includes in its examples the notion that any criticism of Israel is anti-semitic.

Garvey responded by stating that she and her colleagues have offered thoughts and prayers to the victims. She noted that her constituents have not requested a Gaza ceasefire and that the board does not intend to take action on this matter. Moreover, certain  organizations have openly opposed any such action.

It is imperative that the County Board listens to a broader range of constituents and does not overlook the principles of justice and humanity.
