Letter: Arlington leaders unwilling to make tough budget choices

'It’s very misleading to suggest that the only way to afford pay increases for teachers and public-safety personnel is to, once again, hike the county budget.'

To the editor: This is to respond to the unbalanced and misleading remarks made in the letter in the May 2 issue [“Arlington Residents Get Value for Their Tax Dollars”] about the April 25 GazetteLeader editorial objecting to the Arlington County Board’s newest tax hike.

The GazetteLeader has repeatedly made the point that the dramatic  reduction in Arlington’s income stream from commercial property taxes is ongoing. The letter is misleading because it simply assumes there’s no alternative to the County Board practice of spend, spend, spend, and it’s very misleading to suggest that the only way to afford pay  increases for teachers and public-safety personnel is to, once again, hike the county budget.
