Editorial: Department of Justice ends oversight of county schools

It took five years, but it's good to know the school system is making progress on shortcomings

It was good to hear that, after five years being under the oversight of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Arlington school system has met all the requirements set out in a 2019 settlement agreement related to educational opportunities for English-language learners.

That 2019 agreement certainly was a black eye to the school system, which professes its inclusiveness at every turn but had to admit to the Justice Department (Donald Trump’s Justice Department, no less) that it hadn’t been doing enough under the Equal Opportunities Act of 1974 to meet the needs of some of its most vulnerable students.

That said, the school system cleaned up its act and the matter seems to be closed. We can all be thankful for that.
