The return of more travelers in the air during 2022 led to lower on-time rates out of local airports, according to new data.

Ronald Reagan Washington National, Washington Dulles International and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall airports each saw declines in on-time departures for the 11-month period ending Nov. 30, according to new figures from the federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Of the three, Dulles stood at the top of the peak, with 79.46 percent of its flights during the 11 months departing on time (within 15 minutes of schedule), ranking 11th among the nation’s 30 largest airports.

A year before, Dulles was 13th out of 30, with 83 percent of its flights departing on time.

Reagan National placed 19th with 74.86 percent of its flights on time in 2022, compared to 84.92 percent a year ago, when it placed 10th nationally.

BWI saw 63.88 percent of its flights depart on time during 2022, ranking 29th out of 30. A year before, it had been 28th with an on-time rate of 69.5 percent.

For the first 11 months of 2022, Salt Lake City International Airport had the best on-time-departure rating, at 84.3 percent, followed by San Francisco International (82.53%) and Seattle-Tacoma (82.35%).

At the bottom were Chicago-Midway (61.73%), BWI and Dallas Love Field (66.27%) – all three being hubs for Southwest Airlines and all three also being at the bottom (albeit in a different order) in the 2021 rankings.
