U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-8th) has signed on as one of 16 original cosponsors of legislation that would restrict first-strike use of weapons from the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

The measure – HR 669 – is sponsored by  U.S. Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.). Beyer was the only Virginia member of the House to serve as a cosponsor.

The bill was sent to committee, where it likely will languish. Even if Democrats held control of the House as well as the Senate, one suspects the bill would never get to President Biden’s desk, as a president of any political stripe likely would view such restrictions as a limitation of presidential power and veto it.
