On Feb. 6 at 10:52 a.m., a man entered a business in the 1200 block of South Hayes Street, concealed merchandise and exited the store without payment, Arlington police said.

The suspect then entered a nearby business and did the same, police said.

Responding officers took the suspect into custody as he exited the second store. Stolen merchandise was recovered, police said.

While in custody, the suspect provided false information, was non-compliant and assaulted an officer, causing minor injuries, police said.

The suspect was then placed in a parked cruiser, where he produced a concealed lighter and set fire to his seatbelt, police said. The conflagration was extinguished by officers.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the suspect was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service.

The suspect – 30-year-old Derrick Giles of no fixed address – was arrested and charged with assault on police, identity theft, arson, fugitive from justice, obstruction of justice and two counts of petty larceny. He was held without bond.
