Odds favor Helene sparing Northern Virginia from its wrath

But changes in track could result in a lot of rainfall early next week

National Weather Service graphic shows the potential rainfall totals through Sept. 30, 2024, from Hurricane Helene.

Our area's weather forecasters are hedging their bets – as is their custom – but odds seem to favor the impact of Hurricane Helene to be relatively negligible across Northern Virginia.

The storm now sits off Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, ready to make a run toward Florida where it could arrive as a Category 3 storm. After that, the picture gets murky, but the National Hurricane Center is projecting weakening as it moves north and then northwest through the middle of the U.S.

Some computer models have suggested a more easterly track, which could bring significant rainfall to the local area after the weekend.
