Local GOP finds challenger to Sen. Ebbin

39th District leans heavily to the Democratic side
vote-55

It’s a race that probably is over before it begins, but Republicans have found a contender to take on incumbent Democratic State Sen. Adam Ebbin in the new 39th Senate District.

Sophia Moshasha was recruited by the Alexandria Republican Committee; while the district includes portions of Arlington’s southern half, it is centered in Alexandria.

Her entry into the race means that both of the new Senate seats in Arlington will have competition. Republican David Henshaw is challenging incumbent Democrat Barbara Favola in the 40th District, which includes most of the county’s population.

No other candidates are running in either Senate race. Owing to recent redistricting, Arlington saw its Senate districts cut from three to two (and its House districts from four to three).

Both Senate districts are solidly Democratic, but the GOP has been attempting to field candidates in local races this year. In addition to Moshasha and Henshaw, the party found one more – Juan Carlos Fierro is running for County Board – and went 3-for-15 in having contenders for races on the local ballot Nov. 7.
