EcoAction Arlington bestows first 'Impact Awards'

Individual, group, business were among inaugural crop of honorees

EcoAction Arlington on April 25 honored civic and corporate leaders for exceptional service at its sixth annual EcoExtravaganza, held at Clare & Don’s Beach Shack.

The event recognized outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability and water conservation, highlighting the critical role of water in ecosystems and communities in the inaugural presentation of the group’s EcoAction Arlington Impact Awards.

The 2024 awards were bestowed upon Barbara Fillip, the Penrose Tree Canopy Equity Team and RE Tech Advisors. “These recipients have exemplified dedication and leadership in environmental stewardship, significantly advancing EcoAction Arlington’s mission,” the organization said.

Fillip was honored for her service to both EcoAction Arlington and Energy Masters and her relentless commitment to leading environmental outreach and stewardship projects.

The Penrose Tree Canopy Equity Team (represented by Terri Armao, Margaret Alvord and Alex Sakes), received acclaim for its impactful work in enhancing green spaces and promoting urban-tree-canopy expansion in the Penrose neighborhood.

RE Tech Advisors was recognized for engaging its employees in community-outreach events focused on educating participants about tips to reduce energy consumption.

“Achieving our goal of a sustainable community requires the commitment of companies, citizen groups and individual residents. We are so proud to honor all three with our inaugural EcoAction Arlington Impact Awards,” said Mike Lowe, chair of the EcoAction Arlington board of directors.

The evening featured a presentation by Weyessa McAlister, director of community conservation at the Potomac Conservancy and founder and executive director of Bridge H2OPE, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing clean and safe drinking water to Ethiopian rural communities.

Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu in a beach-inspired venue, reflecting the event’s theme and commitment to sustainability.
