Some believe being at the top can provide an advantage

If the political theory that it’s better to be listed at the top of the pack on the election ballot than at the bottom, Natalie Roy and Maureen Coffey perhaps are singing “hallelujahs.”

The two were chosen to occupy the first and second positions in the six-candidate field for Arlington County Board in the June 20 primary.

Ballot positions were chosen at the April 12 Electoral Board meeting.

Following them on the ballot will be County Board aspirants Jonathan Dromgoole, J.D. Spain Sr., Tony Weaver and Susan Cunningham.

Democrats will choose two nominees through the ranked-choice-voting method, with the winners moving on to become odds-on favorites in the November general election. Incumbents Katie Cristol and Christian Dorsey are not seeking re-election.

For sheriff, the ballot order will be Wanda Younger, James Herring and Jose Quiroz. Quiroz is the current sheriff, having been appointed to the position by the Circuit Court upon the retirement of Sheriff Beth Arthur in January.

Because the commonwealth’s attorney position includes two jurisdictions (Arlington and the city of Falls Church), the ballot order among incumbent Parisa Dehghani-Tafti and challenger Josh Katcher will be decided by the State Board of Elections in coming days.
