It’s becoming a par-for-the-course amenity in parking garages, and is on the drawing board at one of Northern Virginia’s two airports.

Funding is in the budget for color-code lighting above parking spaces at the garage at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which will help passengers find open spaces.

Those who have seen the system elsewhere will recognize its simplicity; drivers can look down a long parking row and try to find a green light, which designates an open space. A string of red lights mean all the spaces in that row are filled.

“We will be moving forward on the procurement [of the system] . . . later this year,” said Chryssa Westerlund, executive vice president and chief revenue officer for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, at the authority’s Feb. 15 monthly meeting.

Asked by a board member what the timeline would be for getting the system installed, Westerlund said she didn’t have that information in hand.

A plan for doing the same at Washington Dulles International Airport’s covered parking facilities will be developed later.
