Arlington to salute peace officers killed in line of duty

The Arlington County Police Department and Arlington County Sheriff’s Office will pay tribute to Arlington law-enforcement personnel killed in the line of duty during an observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The event, which is open to the public, will be held on Friday, May 10 at 8 a.m. in the plaza at the Arlington County Justice Center, 1425 North Courthouse Road.

Six members of the Arlington County Police Department have died directly in the line of duty, including Special Officer Louis Shaw (1935), Detective Russell Pettie (1954), Officer Arthur Chorovich (1964), Officer Israel Gonzalez (1972), Officer George Pomraning (1973) and Officer John Buckley (1977). A seventh, Cpl. Harvey Shook III, died in 2016 of cancer believed to have been contracted while working in the rescue and recovery operations following the 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
