Arlington still slightly shy of 100% teacher slots filled

About 37 positions unfilled as of last week

Closer, closer, closer – the Arlington school system draws ever closer to having filled all classroom vacancies as the 2023-24 school year gets going in earnest.

But close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, as the old saying goes, and as of last week, the school system was still shy 33 full-time and four part-time teachers.

“We’re continuing to work as quickly as we can” to fill the positions, Superintendent Francisco Durán told School Board members on Sept. 7.

At 99 percent filled, Arlington’s teaching recruitment has done better this school year than any other school system across Northern Virginia, Durán believes.

The vacant positions are split relatively evenly between elementary-school and secondary-school levels.
