Arlington leaders hearing from the year 2050 . . . well, sort of

The future is now, at least based on the responses received to date as part of the Arlington County government’s “Arlington 2050” planning initiative.

As part of the initiative to plan for what the county might be in a quarter-century’s time, residents have been asked to fill out “postcards from the future,” telling Arlington leaders of 2024 what they’d like the community to look like.

To date, more than 440 individuals have submitted over 500 postcards, County Board Chairman Libby Garvey said on April 24.

“We’ve learned a lot,” Garvey said. “People are starting to tell us not just what their vision for 25 years from now is, but how they think we should get there. We found that very helpful.”

Postcards can be found at libraries and some other government departments, and also can be submitted online via the county government’s Website at arlingtonva.us.

“We’ll be doing more work with them,” said Garvey, who developed the Arlington-in-2050 initiative for her year as chair (and last year) on the County Board. “We’re going to be saying a lot about this for a very long time.”
