APS: New gender = new student-ID card

Identification cards soon will be updated free of charge

Students who decide they want to be recognized a different gender will now be able to switch out their Arlington Public Schools’ student-ID cards for free.

The policy switch is slated to go into effect after School Board action on March 30. The proposed change came after a request from the public, school officials said.

Currently, all secondary-school students and some elementary-school students are issued school IDs, which (at the secondary level) are required to be on the person of the student while on school grounds. Lost ID cards are replaced for a fee, although that can be waived or reduced in some instances.

Another change on the docket at the March 30 meeting: School Board members will revamp language previously referring to students as “homeless” with “a child or youth experiencing homelessness.”
