APS closing in on full teacher staffing

Shortages remain to fill bus-driver ranks

They’ll be close, but Arlington Public Schools’ ranks of teachers and bus drivers are unlikely to be at 100 percent come the start of school on Aug. 28.

The school system as of Aug. 17 still had 58 full-time teacher slots to fill, Superintendent Francisco Durán told School Board members.

While the number is only about 2 percent of the school system’s total educator ranks, “we do need to have 100-percent staffing,” Durán told School Board members.

On the bus-driver side, there were still 20 vacancies as the school year approached, said John Mayo, the school system’s chief operating officer.

“Even if we find someone now, they will not be able to start on Day One because of the training,” he told School Board members.

As a result, some drivers will do double runs at the start of the school year, while supervisory personnel with commercial driver’s licenses will also be asked to help.

“We will have a lot of staff . . . that will be picking up the slack,” Mayo said.
