Should Donald Trump or any other Republican win the popular vote for president in Virginia this year, it will be Michael Maibach’s vote that counts in the 8th Congressional District.

Maibach on April 11 was selected as the 8th District Republican Committee’s presidential elector, and if the GOP wins Virginia in the Nov. 5 election, he and other Republican electors will gather in Richmond in December to formally cast their 13 votes on behalf of the party.

(While the 8th District is reliably Democratic, Virginia – like 48 of the 50 states – has a winner-take-all policy when it comes to dishing out electoral votes.)

8th District Democrats are in the process of choosing their presidential elector. Four years ago, Cragg Hines of Arlington was chosen and cast his ballot for Joe Biden. Hines died late last year.

At the April 11 Republican confab, Luisa Guerra-Young was elected district chair and Nancy Almasi, Diane Cullo and Valerie Wohlleben were elected to the Republican State Central Committee.
