The Arlington County Board on April 22 approved the purchase of two homes – at more than $1 million apiece – as part of its effort to tame stormwater runoff.

The two property owners were among 38 contacted earlier by county staff, to see if they had interest in selling. The properties were deemed to be ones that, if razed, would best help the government’s efforts to reduce flooding in the Spout Run watershed.

At least one property owner already has sold. The two properties that on the April 22 agenda were:

• One at 4423 18th St. North, where the county government and property owner have agreed on a sales price of $1 million.

• One at 4433 18th St. North where the county government and property owner settled on a sales price of $1.3 million.

(The figures do not include projected costs of demolishing the properties and bringing them to a natural state, which is expected to be about $350,000 apiece and will be the responsibility of the county government.)

County officials expect to go to settlement on each property within 45 days. The property owners will have at least 60 days after settlement to retain occupancy.
