While overall sales were down nearly 5 percent year-over-year, two of Northern Virginia’s five most populous localities managed increases for the first quarter of 2024.

Loudoun County saw a boost of 2.8 percent from 848 to 872 while Arlington increased 5.4 percent from 444 to 468, according to a GazetteLeader analysis of figures reported by BrightMLS, based on data from MarketStats by ShowingTime.

Both March 2024 and first-quarter 2024 data were reported April 10.

Loudoun and Arlington represent the third and fourth largest sales markets in Northern Virginia, respectively. But their increases couldn’t offset year-over-year declines in the top two:

• Fairfax County saw a 7.7 percent decrease, from 2,234 to 2,061.

• Prince William County transactions dropped 8 percent, from 1,063 to 978.

Rounding out the top five was Alexandria, whose 416 sales for the quarter were down 6.1%.

Add it all up, and the 4,795 sales for the quarter across the Big Five represented a decline from 5,032 a year before.

Figures represent most, but not all, homes that went to market during the period. First-quarter 2024 figures are preliminary and are subject to revision.
